Peter May was born in 1926. His teacher, who recognised the boy’s talent, supported him already in primary school. After he had finished business school he took drawing and painting lessons for a few years. From 1943 on P. May had to join the army and became a prisoner of war in France in 1945. He was released from war captivity in 1946 and settled down close to Munich. In this time he was concerned with famous artists of Munich’s art scene. His idols were, - and still are: Schleich, Millner, Willroider, Feldhütter etc. Mainly, he studied the romantic landscapes painted by Anton Doll. He trained for years to master the artist’s compositions of colour and the way of using the paintbrush in the same way Doll did. The balance of his repertoire as well as the diversity of his motives is seldom today. A characteristic of May’s painting technique is the unique way of bright and dark paintings and the intensive incidence of light. Today May lives retreated in southern Germany. |
